Case-control study suggests fluoroquinolones may be associated with a small absolute increase in risk of retinal detachment

According to research published in JAMA, use of oral fluoroquinolones may increase the risk of developing a retinal detachment; the absolute risk increase (if any) however appears to be small.   The authors note that fluoroquinolones have been linked to several forms of ocular toxicity.  Cases reported in the literature include macular detachment with flumequine and retinal detachment with ciprofloxacin.  It is thought that breakdown of collagen, possibly secondary to fluoroquinolones therapy, may promote the development of vitreous detachment, leading to an increased risk of retinal (Read more...)
