Organ culture methods allow for safe split corneal transplantation, better management of donor shortage, costs

AMSTERDAM — Split corneal transplantation, using one donor cornea for anterior and posterior lamellar grafts, is made feasible by organ culture methods that allow preservation of donor grafts for up to one week, according to one speaker.   “Splitting corneal transplantation reduces costs and is an effective strategy to manage problems of donor shortage in areas like Asia or also some parts of Europe,” Ludwig M. Heindl, MD, said at the Eucornea meeting.
