Aerie Pharmaceuticals reports net loss of $23.2 million in second quarter

Aerie Pharmaceuticals reported a net loss attributable to common stockholders of $23.2 million, or $0.87 per share, in the second quarter compared with a net loss of $18.8 million, or $0.73 per share, in the same period last year, according to a press release.The net loss was attributed to $13.3 million in research and development expenses and $9.4 million in general and administrative expenses. Higher operating expenses compared with last year included expansion of the company’s employee base to support growth of operations.

National survey shows citizens concerned with vision health but unaware of important eye diseases

A national survey of U.S. residents across all ethnic and racial groups showed good vision health was a priority, with respondents also showing high support for ongoing research for vision and eye health. The online nationwide poll included 2,044 U.S. adults. Poll questions measured respondents’ attitudes on the importance of eye health, concerns about vision loss, support for eye health research, and awareness of eye diseases and risk factors, according to the results published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

Duke researchers develop hand-held device to take high-resolution images of children’s retinas

A new hand-held device capable of taking images of a child’s retina with cellular resolution has been developed by engineers and physicians at Duke University, according to a university press release.The ultra-compact hand-held device, which is based on OCT and other technologies, allows researchers to gather structural information about the eyes of infants and toddlers for the first time.

Study: Color discernment may improve after DMEK in patients with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy

The majority of patients with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy who underwent Descemet’s membrane endothelial keratoplasty showed an improvement in color discernment scores after surgery, according to a study. The prospective, single-center study included 26 eyes of 26 patients with Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy who underwent DMEK; 24 eyes were pseudophakic and two eyes were phakic.
