Lessons learned over 5 years of follow-up with Kamra inlay for presbyopia

MILAN — Long-term outcomes with the Kamra small aperture inlay have shown how to ensure safety and optimize efficacy of the implant. At the OSN Italy meeting, Jay Pepose, MD, PhD, said that lessons were learned from the FDA investigational device exemption study, which enrolled 507 patients from 24 sites in the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific region. The Kamra inlay (AcuFocus) is implanted monocularly in a corneal pocket in the nondominant eye. The inlay blocks the peripheral unfocused light and allows only focused light to reach the retina.

FDA announces new ‘streamlined’ application for investigative drugs

The FDA has released a new application for investigative drugs that it says will cut the amount of time physicians spend filling out such requests, as part of a larger effort to “streamline” the process of providing medications still undergoing regulatory review to their patients with severe illness.The final Individual Patient Expanded Access Investigational New Drug Application can be used by physicians to request expanded access to investigational drugs for patients who suffer from serious or immediately life-threatening diseases, in the absence of any comparable or satisfactory alternative treatment. VIDEO: Study shows resident-performed LRI visual results superior with femtosecond laser

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — At the Kiawah Eye meeting here, Reid Turner, MD, discusses research looking at manual vs. femtosecond laser-assisted limbal relaxing incisions following cataract surgery performed by residents. The research found a statistically significant difference in postoperative uncorrected visual acuity favoring LRI performed with femtosecond laser over LRI performed manually.

Clearside announces pricing of initial public offering

Clearside Biomedical announced that its initial public offering of 7.2 million shares of common stock will be priced at $7 per share, according to a press release. Shares were expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq Global Market on June 2 under the symbol “CLSD.” The offering is expected to close on June 7, subject to customary closing conditions, the release said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Pneumatic vitreolysis with limited face-down positioning appears to be a viable treatment option for resolving focal vitreomacular traction and closing select stage 2 macular holes, a speaker here said.According to a study presented by Clement Chan, MD, FACS, at the American Ophthalmological Society meeting, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of pneumatic vitreolysis for treating vitreomacular traction, mostly because of limitations in the success rate, cost and potential side effects found with use of Jetrea (ocriplasmin, ThromboGenics) for this purpose.

AbbVie receives positive opinion in Europe for Humira as treatment for noninfectious uveitis

AbbVie has received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use for Humira as a treatment for noninfectious uveitis, according to a company press release. If approved by the European Commission, Humira (adalimumab) “would be the first biologic treatment option offered in the European Union for certain patients with noninfectious intermediate, posterior and panuveitis,” the release said.
