Speaker: Omidria use decreases need for Malyugin ring in cataract surgery
NEW ORLEANS – Malyugin ring use decreased by about two-thirds in one surgeon’s experience when he used Omidria to maintain pupil width in patients undergoing routine cataract surgery.“The stuff works,” Luther L. Fry, MD, said in a presentation at the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. NEW ORLEANS — In a study using the Iridex Cyclo G6 system with the MicroPulse P3 probe to reduce IOP in a cohort of glaucoma patients, IOP lowering was “very much what we would expect for any incisional glaucoma procedure,” Robert J. Congressional subcommittee debates Medicare Part B demonstration project
The U.S. House Energy Subcommittee on Health today held a hearing to offer doctor and patient perspectives on planned changes to the Medicare Part B drug reimbursement model.The proposed changes — put forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) — would affect the ways in which doctors are reimbursed for the drugs they prescribe to patients covered by Medicare. Currently, Medicare reimburses the average sales price of the drug, plus an additional 6% of cost.
Mauritania approaching goal of trachoma eradication thanks to private funding
PARIS — The ambitious goal of lowering the prevalence of blinding trachoma from 16% to less than 3% in Mauritania was achieved thanks to private sponsorship in cooperation with the local government, as reported by Abdallahi Ould Minnih, MD, who received this year’s Gold Medal award from the International Organization Against Trachoma and the French League Against Trachoma. Nearly one-third of high-achieving female physician–scientists reported experiencing sexual harassment during their careers, according to survey results published online today in JAMA. Although the percentage has declined considerably over the past 20 years, the findings suggest additional efforts are needed to eliminate both unconscious bias and more overtly inappropriate behaviors in the workplace, Reshma Jagsi, MD, DPhil, associate professor and deputy chair of radiation oncology at University of Michigan Medical School, and colleagues concluded.
