Low-power accommodating toric IOL shows high rotational stability

NEW ORLEANS — A low-power accommodative toric IOL improved uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity, reduced refractive cylinder and showed high rotational stability in long eyes, according to a study presented here.“The low diopter accommodative toric IOL displayed a very stable rotational component, even in high axial myopes,” Cynthia Matossian, MD, FACS, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Extended range of vision IOL meets endpoint of improved intermediate vision

NEW ORLEANS —The Tecnis Symfony extended range of vision IOL achieved the primary endpoint of improved intermediate vision in the Abbott sponsored pivotal clinical trial, according to one of the study investigators. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Tecnis Symfony IOL model ZXR00, which is an investigational device in the US.

Nd:YAG capsulotomy elevates vision quality

NEW ORLEANS — Patients with posterior capsule opacity after cataract surgery who underwent Nd:YAG capsulotomy had better visual quality postoperatively, according to a study presented here. “This is a new technology that we are using more and more in our clinic, and we’re understanding that this is something that can help us make clinical decisions, but in retrospect, it can help us justify those clinical decisions,” Jake C. McMillin, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Intraoperative aberrometry reduces astigmatism in patients undergoing IOL implantation

NEW ORLEANS — Use of intraoperative aberrometry reduced residual refractive astigmatism in patients undergoing toric IOL implantation, according to a study presented here. “Our objective was to compare mean preoperative keratometric and postoperative refractive astigmatism and determine the distribution of postoperative refractive astigmatism in eyes implanted with toric IOLs,” Robert P. Lehmann, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Zeiss markerless system enables precise toric IOL alignment

NEW ORLEANS — With a year of experience using the Zeiss Cataract Suite markerless system, David F. Chang, MD, said he now finds the traditional manual marking method for aligning toric IOLs to be “crude.”Chang related his experience using the system at a media briefing hosted by Carl Zeiss Meditec at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here.

Combination of high and low add IOLs improve visual acuities, increase patient satisfaction

NEW ORLEANS — The combination of Tecnis ZKB00 +2.75 and ZMB00 +4.00 multifocal IOLs improved near, intermediate and distance visual acuities and increased overall patient satisfaction, according to a study presented here. “In absence of a real trifocal in the U.S., we’re offering multifocality, but in true effect, it’s really only bifocal lens implants that we’re putting in,” Barry A. Schechter, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. “In order to improve spectacle independence and improve the range of vision in our patients, I’ve decided (Read more...)

Study gives advantage to LASIK over long-term contact lens wear with regard to ocular discomfort

NEW ORLEANS — Wavefront-guided LASIK resulted in improved distance vision with a lower incidence of adverse effects than for long-term contact lens wear, according to a study presented here.“LASIK is arguably safer than long-term contact lens wear, with an almost three times advantage in terms of ocular discomfort and better levels of 20/16 vision, with no long-term differences in glare, halos, starbursts or dry eye symptoms,” Steven J. Dell, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract Surgery meeting.

Multifocal, accommodating IOLs yield high patient satisfaction

NEW ORLEANS — Patients who underwent cataract surgery with bilateral multifocal and bilateral accommodating IOLs reported high satisfaction, according to a study presented here. “Patients in both groups were very satisfied with the vision they have. They have gotten used to it at 5 years and felt that this was a good fit for them,” John A. Hovanesian, MD, FACS, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

VIDEO: Surgeon discusses advantages of Omidria

NEW ORLEANS — At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Eric D. Donnenfeld, MD, takes a real-world look at using Omidria, the 1% phenylephrine/0.3% ketorolac formulation from Omeros, during cataract surgery. Use of Omidria resulted in faster and safer surgery with fewer complications and better visual outcomes than when Omidria was not used, he said.

VIDEO: Surgeon highlights presentation on treating narrow angle glaucoma

NEW ORLEANS — At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Malik Y. Kahook, MD, discusses the synergistic symposia that take place at both the American Glaucoma Society meeting and the ASCRS meeting, and gives his perspective on one of the presentations that gave practical information on decreasing anterior synechiae in patients with narrow angle glaucoma.

Binkhorst Lecture: Epi-on cross-linking achieves favorable visual results for keratoconus, ectasia

NEW ORLEANS — Patients with keratoconus and corneal ectasia who underwent epi-on cross-linking achieved favorable visual results, according to a speaker here. “We know now [that the epi-on procedure] is effective, produces less pain, provides a much more rapid visual recovery, increases best spectacle corrected visual acuity – which is equivalent to or perhaps better than reported epi-off results – and there’s a much less likelihood of complications with this technique than the classical Dresden technique,” R. Doyle Stulting, MD, PhD, said during the Binkhorst Lecture at the American Society (Read more...)

Pattern electroretinography improves early glaucoma detection

NEW ORLEANS — Pattern electroretinography is a reliable and objective tool for diagnosing and managing glaucoma, particularly in low-risk glaucoma suspects, a speaker told colleagues here.“Pattern ERG is probably one of the most useful clinical tools for glaucoma patients and early glaucoma suspects. It has really changed who we are treating and I think, based on that, we’re doing a better job of identifying the average risk and the lower risk people who we can defer treatment on as well,” Robert J. Noecker, MD, said at Glaucoma Day preceding the (Read more...)

NEW ORLEANS — Smart technology is finding its way into the ophthalmology space, with potential to help patients comply with their medication regimens, according to a speaker here.Twenty percent to 30% of medication prescriptions are never filled, and 50% of medications for chronic disease are not taken as prescribed, “as we all know all too well,” Rohit Krishna, MD, told colleagues at Glaucoma Day preceding the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Plateau iris syndrome indication for endocycloplasty

NEW ORLEANS — Plateau iris syndrome is an indication for improving angle architecture with endocycloplasty, which shrinks the ciliary processes, Ramesh S. Ayyala, MD, told colleagues at Glaucoma Day preceding the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. “Endocycloplasty has been used primarily as an adjunct with phacoemulsification cataract extraction and may be indicated for plateau iris if ciliary processes are directed anteriorly,” Ayyala said.

Bowman’s layer transplantation improves visual outcomes in patients with keratoconus

NEW ORLEANS — Visual outcomes improved in patients with advanced keratoconus who underwent Bowman’s layer transplantation, according to a speaker here. “One thing that we all know is that in the early to intermediate phases of keratoconus, most of the visual dysfunction can be corrected by wearing a contact lens, but often with progression of disease may become so bulbously irregular that continued contact lens wear becomes either impossibly uncomfortable or simply ineffectual,” Jack S. Parker Jr., MD, said during Cornea Day preceding the American Society of Cataract and Refractive (Read more...)
