Iris cysts may be associated with dissecting aortic aneurysms

PHILADELPHIA — A type of congenital iris cyst may be associated with life-threatening dissecting aortic aneurysms, a speaker said at the Wills Eye Alumni Conference here.Bilateral multifocal iris pigment epithelial cysts, also known as iris flocculi, may result from a shared genetic mutation in smooth muscle that affects the iris and aorta, Jerry A. Shields, MD, said.

Aggressive intervention minimizes sight-threatening potential of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis

PHILADELPHIA — Early identification, immediate and aggressive surgical intervention, and application of both systemic and postoperative topical clindamycin can be sight-saving in cases of periorbital necrotizing fasciitis, according to a presentation here.“Necrotizing fasciitis of the periorbital region is an exceedingly rare condition, with less than 100 cases reported over the past 20 years,” Charles Kim, MD, said at the Wills Eye Alumni Conference “To put it in further perspective, the two largest case series to date consist of 17 and seven patients, respectively, so the span of five, our project, (Read more...)

Trabectome-phaco yields less refractive precision than phaco alone

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Combined Trabectome surgery and phacoemulsification yielded unforeseen refractive changes that were not predicted by current IOL calculation techniques, according to a scientific poster presented here. The retrospective study, presented by Douglas J. Rhee, MD, and colleagues at the American Glaucoma Society meeting, included 50 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma; 34 patients underwent combined phacoemulsification and Trabectome (NeoMedix) surgery, and 16 patients underwent phacoemulsification alone.

Micro-stent combined with phaco reduces IOP, medication use at 3 years

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A supraciliary micro-stent reduced IOP with a high safety profile in patients with open-angle glaucoma, according to a scientific poster presented at the American Glaucoma Society meeting here. Reay H. Brown, MD, and colleagues reported results of the CyPass Clinical Experience study, a prospective, multicenter analysis that included 522 patients; 269 patients underwent combined small-incision cataract surgery and implantation of a CyPass micro-stent (Transcend Medical). Of the 269 patients who had combined surgery, 102 had uncontrolled IOP (21 mm Hg or higher) and 167 had controlled (Read more...)

Study: Bimatoprost sustained-release implant maintains IOP lowering up to 24 weeks

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — At all dose strengths, a bimatoprost sustained-release implant was well tolerated and comparable to topical bimatoprost in overall IOP reduction, according to 6-month interim results of a phase 1/2 study.“We need something better than eye drops, so we’re all looking for that right way to lower pressure with a sustained delivery device,” E. Randy Craven, MD, said at the American Glaucoma Society meeting.
