Study finds latanoprost non-inferior to timolol for paediatric glaucoma

According to the results of this head-to-head study published early online in Ophthalmology, latanoprost was non-inferior to timolol for the treatment of glaucoma in children.   The authors note that there have been no large, well-controlled trials to date assessing the safety and efficacy of prostaglandin analogues in the treatment of paediatric glaucoma.  The objective of their short-term study was to compare the relative safety and efficacy of latanoprost and timolol in this patient population.   A total of 139 individuals aged ?18 years who were diagnosed with glaucoma (and a morning intraocular pressure [IOP] of ?22mmHg) in at last one eye at baseline were randomised to treatment with latanoprost 0.005% once every night (and vehicle once every morning to maintain blinding; n=69) or timolol 0.5% (0.25% for those aged <3 years) twice daily (n=70) for 12 weeks.  Ocular safety and IOP were evaluated at baseline and weeks 1, 4 and 12 (study ...
