NHS Choices ‘Behind the Headlines’ assessment of press reports that vitamin D ‘may stop AMD sight loss’

The 'Behind the Headlines' service from NHS Choices has featured a quality assessment of press reports that "more vitamin D a day could keep glasses away" (reported by The Independent and others; 17th January 2012).   The assessment notes that the reports were based on the results of an animal study, in which mice were treated with vitamin D daily for six weeks.  At the end of this period the researchers looked for the presence of amyloid beta (which accumulates with ageing) and C3d (a marker of inflammation) in their eyes, as the accumulation of these proteins and inflammation are thought to increase the risk of people developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
