Retrospective study: Topical antibiotics increase risk of endophthalmitis after intravitreal injections

This retrospective Canadian study examined the incidence of endophthalmitis (inflammatory condition of the intraocular cavities) following different antibiotic prophylaxis strategies for intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factors and triamcinolone acetonide. The study found that the overall rate of intravitreal injection-related endophthalmitis is greater with the use of topical antibiotics, given immediately or for five days after the injection, compared with no antibiotics.   To investigate, researchers reviewed consecutive patients who received intravitreal injections of triamcinolone acetonide (n=953), 1.25 mg bevacizumab (n=5386), 0.5 mg ranibizumab (n=9453), and 0.3 mg pegaptanib (n=121) for various indications (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, central and branch retinal vein occlusion, and miscellaneous causes) between January 2005 and August 2010.
