High rates of spectacle independence, patient satisfaction seen with Symfony IOL

At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting in May, I reported on the results of four prospective, multicenter clinical investigations of Abbott Medical Optics’ Tecnis Symfony IOL, a new presbyopia-correcting IOL that merges two complementary technologies — an echelette design and achromatic technology — to provide an extended range of continuous vision. The studies were conducted at 69 sites in the United States, New Zealand and Europe, with 3- to 6-month follow-up of 1,464 eyes of 735 subjects. In each of the studies, patients were randomized to bilateral (Read more...)

Intrastromal corneal ring segment helps correct high astigmatism after DALK

Corneal transplantation has progressed significantly from full-thickness penetrating keratoplasty to selective corneal transplantation in which only the diseased portions of corneal tissue are replaced surgically with similar healthy donor tissue. This has revolutionized corneal transplantation because the healthy parts of the patient’s cornea are retained. When the endothelium is untouched surgically, this eliminates the possibility of endothelial graft rejection. The diseased portion of the cornea needs to be localized to the anterior regions of the patient’s cornea, such as in keratoconus, while the endothelium remains healthy. When the corneal stroma is (Read more...)

MicroShunt similarly reduces IOP in phakic, pseudophakic eyes, and when combined with phaco

COPENHAGEN — In glaucomatous eyes implanted with the InnFocus MicroShunt, there was no significant difference in IOP outcomes whether the eyes were phakic or pseudophakic, or when implantation in phakic eyes was combined with phacoemulsification and IOL placement, according to a study presented here.“This procedure is very simple with immediate and safe reduction of IOP,” Isabella Riss, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, where she reported 2-year results of a study comparing outcomes after MicroShunt placement in the three groups of eyes.
