There are no published trials directly comparing ranibizumab and bevacizumab for the treatment of diabetic macular oedema. To address this gap in knowledge, this systematic review indirectly compared the effectiveness of ranibizumab and bevacizumab using data from randomised controlled studies.
The researchers searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for trials using a common comparator (multiple laser treatment) measuring best corrected visual acuity. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients with an improvement in best corrected visual acuity of more than two lines on the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) scale.
Five randomised controlled trials with follow-up of 6-12 months were considered sufficiently similar to be included in the indirect comparison; however the studies were small, resulting in wide credible intervals.
