According to the results of a study published in the journal 'Optometry and Vision Science' that used data from a large optometric clinic population, statin use was substantially higher in patients with type 2 diabetes and was associated with age-related cataracts. The authors of the research suggest that further long-term study is warranted to enable formation of recommendations on the monitoring of crystalline lenses in patients with type 2 diabetes benefiting from statins.
The authors note that several studies have identified diabetes as a risk factor for age-related cataracts. Although statins are commonly prescribed for patients with diabetes, little work has been done on the combined impact of the use of this class of medicines and the presence of diabetes on cataract development.
