New study aims to address smoking as cause of AMD, cataract

Smoking plays a role in the development of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, according to a speaker at the Prevent Blindness Focus on Eye Health National Summit in Washington, D.C.“There was a recent report out of Australia indicating that, for new cases of blindness diagnosed above the age of 50, 20% of those cases are attributable to smoking,” David Lee, PhD, a professor and graduate program director for the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami, said during the Summit.
