Declines in vision, activity linked to increased mortality risk
Researchers discovered a direct relationship between loss of visual acuity and decline in instrumental activities of daily living levels, which increases the risk of mortality in older adults. The prospective longitudinal study included 2,520 noninstitutionalized adults between 65 and 84 years old. Patients were reassessed at 2, 6 and 8 years after baseline. The study involved an at-home interview and a 4- to 5-hour clinic examination.
