Diabetes mellitus associated with protective effect against keratoconus

Keratoconus may occur more often in patients without diabetes mellitus than in those with it, according to a study.The retrospective case-control study included 1,383 patients with keratoconus and 1,383 control subjects without keratoconus in whom the presence or absence of either type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) was investigated. Nine patients in the keratoconus group and six patients in the control group had type 1 DM. Two patients in the keratoconus group and 25 patients in the control group had type 2 DM.
