First patient receives Orion cortical visual prosthesis

The first human patient was implanted with the Orion cortical visual prosthesis system, according to a press release from Second Sight Medical Products.
The implantation was completed by Nader Pouratian, MD, PhD, at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in January as part of a feasibility study.
The Orion captures images with a miniature video camera mounted on the patient’s glasses and converts them to a series of small electrical pulses, which are delivered wirelessly to an array of electrodes implanted on the surface of the visual cortex, the release (Read more...)
