Carriers of dysfunctional CFI gene may be more likely for progression to GA

NEW YORK — Carriers of a dysfunctional CFI gene have a higher risk for progression to geographic atrophy, according to a speaker here.
“These results underscore the importance of genetic susceptibility and the effects of rare as well as common variants,” Johanna Seddon, MD, ScM, FARVO, FASRS, said at the American Society of Retina Specialists annual meeting. “The results provide biologic mechanisms to explore preventative measures to shorten disease burden and find and improve more targeted therapies.”
