Macular retinal nerve fiber layer thickness may be a prognostic biomarker of cognitive decline in older individuals, according to a group of researchers.
The study included 430 Korean participants aged 60 years or older, of whom 215 completed a follow-up of 4 to 6 years. At baseline, spectral-domain OCT was performed to measure the retinal layer thickness of both the macular and peripapillary areas. Comprehensive neuropsychological assessment was performed to assess baseline cognitive function using the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease
