Continued follow-up crucial for eyes with sickle cell retinopathy

NEW YORK — Patients with sickle cell retinopathy had worse visual outcomes if they were lost to follow-up even if they resumed treatment, according to a study.
In a poster presented at the American Society of Retina Specialists annual meeting, Meera D. Sivalingam, MD, and colleagues wrote that visual outcomes can depend greatly on adherence to treatment, and as much as 35% of patients with sickle cell disease may be lost to follow-up.
