Ocular syphilis may result in severe visual loss

NEW YORK — One in five eyes with ocular syphilis may experience severe visual loss even though it is a treatable disease, according to a poster presented at the American Society of Retina Specialists annual meeting.
“Ocular syphilis is a rare manifestation of syphilis that can occur at any stage,” Abdelrahman M. Elhusseiny, MD, and colleagues wrote. “Uveitis is the most common manifestation, but syphilis can affect almost any of the ocular structures.”
