Decreased runway: Reflections from an ophthalmologist approaching retirement

After 36 years of private practice in ophthalmology, my career runway is becoming noticeably shorter.
I am not alone with pending retirement around the corner, as pointed out by my friend and mentor, Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, who recently noted that 40% of our profession is now older than 60 years of age in the U.S. I am a fellowship-trained cornea, anterior segment and refractive surgery specialist, and I have practiced these disciplines for almost 4 decades in Mobile, Alabama, in a private practice eyes, ears, nose and throat setting.
