Delayed IOL surgery yields better outcomes in traumatic cataract

HELSINKI — Primary IOL implantation in pediatric open globe injuries with active inflammation showed inferior visual outcomes compared with staged rehabilitation in a retrospective study performed at a tertiary hospital in Western India.
“We included children below 16 years of age with open and closed globe injuries,” Nikhil M. Gandhi, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons winter meeting. “We included 78 eyes of 78 children. The mean age was around 7 ± 1.5 years, and almost 55% of them were boys.”
