Cataract surgery lessens risk, development and burden of dementia

Dementia is a highly prevalent condition, affecting 57 million people worldwide, with nearly 10 million new cases each year, according to a recent WHO report.
In 2020, the Lancet Commission on dementia identified 12 modifiable risk factors: less education, hearing loss, hypertension, smoking, obesity, depression, physical inactivity, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, traumatic brain injury, air pollution and social isolation. In a 2024 update, two new evidence-based risk factors were added: high cholesterol and vision loss.
Vision loss that occurs around the age at which dementia often
