Sclerosing Polycystic Adenosis of the Lacrimal Gland
We wish to report a case of sclerosing polycystic adenosis (SPA) of the lacrimal gland. A 68-year-old woman presented to her primary care provider with a complaint of right orbital pain that occurred each time she cried. Computed tomography of the orbit in October 2011 showed an 8-mm, enhancing lesion adjacent to the right lacrimal gland without bony erosions. The lesion demonstrated homogeneous T1 hypointensity on magnetic resonance imaging (, available at http://aaojournal.org). Excisional biopsy of the lacrimal gland mass was performed in December 2011, and the encapsulated mass was grossly removed. The pathology report noted nests and cords of cells “consistent with adenoid cystic carcinoma with perineural invasion and positive margins.” Immunohistochemical staining showed that the specimen was positive for smooth muscle myosin, CD117 (c-kit), p63, and focal nuclear reaction for androgen receptors.
