OSN Europe: Phakic lens offers new option for presbyopia correction

A novel posterior chamber phakic IOL may provide correction for presbyopia, as well as myopia and astigmatism. According to Luis Salvà Ladaria, MD, and Scott Anderson García, MD, ophthalmologists in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, it is “the missing link” within the options for presbyopia.“We have, alone or in combination, several laser options, refractive lensectomy, corneal inlays and even eye drops, but a phakic IOL had not yet been proposed,” Salvà said in an interview with Ocular Surgery News.

Spanish university launches distance learning course in refractive surgery

Miguel Hernández University in Alicante, Spain, launched this month the first worldwide online university course in refractive surgery, a comprehensive, 250-hour, 1-year, distance learning program leading to a university certificate.“Something unique. Study: Higher carotenoid intake reduced risk of advanced AMD over long term

An increased intake of lutein/zeaxanthin reduced the long-term risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration, according to a large study.The prospective cohort study included 63,443 women and 38,603 men who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study between 1984 and 2010. All subjects were older than 50 years and were not diagnosed with AMD, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline.

Additional data from Spark’s SPK-RPE65 phase 3 trial show gains in functional vision, light sensitivity

SPK-RPE65 resulted in a sustained difference in functional vision and light sensitivity between study subjects and controls, according to additional data from a phase 3 pivotal trial, Spark Therapeutics announced in a press release.SPK-RPE65 is the company’s lead product candidate for the treatment of RPE65-mediated inherited retinal dystrophies.

CMS, ONC issue new rules to make EHR better accessed, more useful

Scotogenic lens reviewed as alternative to patching for binocular diplopia

A novel scotogenic contact lens may be as effective in eliminating binocular diplopia and superior in preserving patients’ visual fields compared with standard occlusion, according to a study.Binocular diplopia requires immediate symptomatic control, usually with eye patches or opaque contact lenses. In eliminating symptoms, current standard occlusion techniques reduce peripheral vision between 48% and 76%, the study said.
