OSN Europe: Phakic lens offers new option for presbyopia correction
A novel posterior chamber phakic IOL may provide correction for presbyopia, as well as myopia and astigmatism. According to Luis Salvà Ladaria, MD, and Scott Anderson García, MD, ophthalmologists in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, it is “the missing link” within the options for presbyopia.“We have, alone or in combination, several laser options, refractive lensectomy, corneal inlays and even eye drops, but a phakic IOL had not yet been proposed,” Salvà said in an interview with Ocular Surgery News.
Phaco alone and with viscogonioplasty may result in similar IOP reductions
Combined phacoemulsification-viscogonioplasty and phacoemulsification alone may have the same effects on long-term IOP in primary angle-closure glaucoma, according to a study. The prospective randomized clinical trial evaluated 46 eyes that underwent ph…
Spanish university launches distance learning course in refractive surgery
Miguel Hernández University in Alicante, Spain, launched this month the first worldwide online university course in refractive surgery, a comprehensive, 250-hour, 1-year, distance learning program leading to a university certificate.“Something unique. A very innovative approach to a subspecialty area that is neglected by traditional residency curricula. An opportunity for young and less young ophthalmologists around the world to have access to a course of the highest academic standard without having to move or commute,” Jorge L. Study: Higher carotenoid intake reduced risk of advanced AMD over long term
An increased intake of lutein/zeaxanthin reduced the long-term risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration, according to a large study. The prospective cohort study included 63,443 women and 38,603 men who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study between 1984 and 2010. All subjects were older than 50 years and were not diagnosed with AMD, diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline.

Publication Exclusive: Amniotic membrane can be used to manage Mooren’s ulcer with descemetocele
Mooren’s ulcer is a rare disorder that may require surgical intervention. Although Mooren’s ulcer can occur in both sexes at any age, it is usually seen in adult men who are otherwise healthy with often no detectable systemic illness. The exact etiology of Mooren’s ulcer remains unidentified to date, even though this condition was first described as early as 1849 by Bowman and further characterized by Mooren in 1863. Both cell-mediated and humoral immune mechanisms have been implicated in the possible pathogenic pathway, leading to peripheral corneal melt and corneal (Read more...)
