Second glaucoma drainage device offers moderate long-term success for pediatric glaucoma

Implantation of a second glaucoma drainage device for the treatment of refractory pediatric glaucoma was shown to have moderate success over time, according to study results. Researchers retrospectively reviewed Duke University’s surgical records from 1997 to 2012 and identified 43 eyes of 37 patients with two or more drainage devices, refractory pediatric glaucoma and a minimum of 6 months of postoperative follow-up data.

Carl Zeiss Meditec reports 7.3% revenue growth in Q2

Carl Zeiss Meditec reported an increase in revenue to €673.7 million, corresponding to a growth of 7.3% after adjusting for exchange rates, according to a company press release.Taking into account the negative impact from currency translation effects present in previous quarters, the company’s revenue increased by 3.8% compared with the same period in 2013.

Healthier eating choices decrease risk of advanced AMD

Patients who consumed diets high in fruits, vegetables, chicken and nuts low in red meat were found to have a lower prevalence of advanced age-related macular degeneration, according to study findings.Researchers collected food frequency data from the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study at the study’s baseline between 1990 and 1994 using a 121-item food frequency questionnaire. At follow-up between 2003 and 2007, the researchers assessed 21,132 patients for AMD prevalence using retinal photographs.

Community Health Systems hacked; data for 4.5 million patients compromised

Community Health Systems reported to the Securities and Exchange Commission today that hackers in China have obtained patient names, addresses, birthdates, telephone numbers and social security numbers from 4.5 million of its patients between April and June.CHS said in the report that while the stolen data violates HIPAA regulations, credit card and medical information was not included in the security breach. ABIM to ‘explore’ MOC language change

The American Board of Internal Medicine announced today that it is going “explore” making changes to the maintenance of certification, or MOC, reporting status. Currently, physicians are either reported to be “meeting MOC requirements” or “not meeting MOC requirements.” The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) wrote in a press release that the current language is “causing legitimate confusion,” particularly because some physicians have been grandfathered into the new requirements of the MOC program.
