Data support consensus that dyslexia is not primarily a vision problem

The majority of children with dyslexia achieved normal results for all ophthalmic tests — supporting the consensus that dyslexia is not primarily a vision problem and vision-based therapies are not justified or likely to help, according to study results. While clinical studies suggest that dyslexia is not caused by vision abnormalities, interventions and therapies directed at eye-related functions are still available.

SOE takes action toward harmonization of educational practices, implementation of surgical training in Europe

VIENNA —  Improving education and opportunities for young ophthalmologists across Europe is one of the priorities of the European Society of Ophthalmology, according to a speaker. The results of the EBO Surgical Skills questionnaire, disclosed at the SOE meeting by Marko Hawlina, MD, PhD, chairperson of the SOE Education Committee, highlighted a situation of extreme disparity between study curricula for ophthalmology across Europe, in addition to a chronic lack of opportunities for surgical training in most countries. Offers for fellowships are also few and seldom publicized.

Modern cataract surgery minimizes risk of complications in diabetic patients

VIENNA —  Most diabetic patients can benefit from modern cataract surgery as much as people without diabetes, unless pre-existing diabetic macular edema is present, according to one specialist. “Most of us have been raised with the ETDRS recommendations to perform, after cataract extraction, panretinal laser photocoagulation in patients with severe nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy and focal grid laser for patients with macular edema. We were in the 1980s and treated patients with the techniques of those days,” Morten la Cour, MD, said at the meeting of the European Society of Ophthalmology.
