Pressurizing, hydrating protocol reduces endophthalmitis rate

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Pressurizing and hydrating the eye with vancomycin and balanced salt solution in association with ofloxacin pledgets was effective in reducing post-cataract endophthalmitis to one case in 13,658 operations at an ophthalmology department in Colorado. “We were impressed by the European rate of post-cataract endophthalmitis with the use of cefuroxime and decided to perform interventions to reduce the rate in our organization,” Lee Schelonka, MD, said at the meeting of the European Society of Ophthalmology.

Heterogeneous patient response to anti-VEGF treatment suggests close monitoring, individualized approaches

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Many questions remain about predictors and causative factors, but interindividual variability in the response to age-related macular degeneration treatment strongly suggests that an individualized approach is prudent, according to a specialist. “We do have a high degree of heterogeneity. Patients respond on a very individual basis, even with the same disease entity. This is reflected by the huge differences in the number of treatments we have to give,” Frank G. Holz, MD, said at the meeting of the European Society of Ophthalmology.

Bag-in-the-lens technique shows no secondary opacification at 2 years in series of pediatric patients

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Good, stable results and no secondary opacification were reported in a series of children implanted with the bag-in-the-lens method at a pediatric eye clinic in Ukraine. The bag-in-the-lens technique entails the creation of a twin capsulorrhexis in the anterior and posterior capsules. A specially designed IOL that clasps the remaining capsular bag between circumferential haptic rims is then implanted.
