OCT pinpoints structural changes related to fluorescein leakage from microaneurysms

Focal fluorescein leakage from microaneurysms correlated strongly with lack of capsular structure and other anatomic changes in eyes with diabetic retinopathy, according to a study. The retrospective study included 132 eyes of 92 patients. Investigators examined microaneurysms detected with color fundus photographs, fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography. Spectral-domain OCT was used to document the characteristics of microaneurysms, such as capsular structure, hyper-reflective spots and adjacent cystoid spaces.
