Intense pulsed light treatment with meibomian gland expression relieves refractory dry eye

Refractory dry eye treated with a combination of intense pulsed light and meibomian gland expression resulted in a significant improvement in dry eye symptoms and meibomian gland function, according to a retrospective analysis of 35 subjects.“For older patients with years of meibomian gland disease, automated thermal pulsation alone was not giving patients relief,” according to co-investigator Joanne F. Shen, MD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, which has a large referral practice of recalcitrant dry eye patients.
