Adipose-derived stem cell transplantation shows promise for keratoconus
A phase 1 study showed the safety of autologous adipose-derived adult stem cell transplantation in the corneal stroma, including the ability of the cells to survive in vivo and produce a small amount of new collagen. This form of cellular therapy could potentially help remodel and strengthen the cornea in patients with keratoconus.The prospective study was set up as a cooperation among the research, development and innovation department of Vissum Instituto Oftalmologico de Alicante, Spain, and several international partners.
