Cataract surgery improves vision in patients with Ebola-negative ocular fluid

Patients who test negative for Ebola virus RNA in their ocular fluid can safely undergo cataract surgery, according to a study.
A cross-sectional study of 137 Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors were screened. Fifty EVD survivors were ultimately enrolled in the study, of which 46 patients had visually significant cataracts, one had a subluxated lens, two had active uveitis and one had a blind painful eye due to uveitis. The researchers evaluated Ebola virus RNA persistence in ocular fluids and tissues of the individuals in the study.
