InterStim Incontinence and Bladder Control Implant Now Controlled via App

Medtronic won FDA approval to introduce the InterStim smart programmer to control the company’s InterStim neurostimulation system used to manage overactive bladder, bowel incontinence, and some types of urinary retention.

The InterStim system delivers sacral neuromodulation therapy via an implant that looks similar to a cardiac pacemarker. The new InterStim smart programmer is a Samsung device with a Medtronic’s app loaded onto it.

It uses wireless connectivity to interface with the implant and the intuitive, touchscreen interface is used by clinicians to program the implant and by patients to discreetly control when and how much therapy they need. It’s certainly notable that we’re living in a time when bowel control can be managed via a smartphone app.

“In addition to simplified programming and ongoing management of InterStim therapy, the smart programmer is discreet, which is meaningful to patients because OAB can greatly impact confidence, intimacy and activities,” in a statement said Steven Siegel, M.D., Metro Urology Centers for Female Urology and Continence Care, Minneapolis, Minn. “It takes courage to seek treatment and many struggle to find long-term relief. My goal is to address OAB symptoms and help restore my patients’ quality of life, and I’m pleased to have a tool like the InterStim smart programmer for patients who may benefit from neuromodulation.”
