FDA gives greenlight for phase 2 study of travoprost with iDose delivery system

The FDA will allow Glaukos to initiate a U.S. investigational new drug phase 2 study of a travoprost intraocular implant with the iDose delivery system in patients with glaucoma, according to a press release. “We are very pleased that the FDA is allowing this trial to begin several months in advance of our original target date,” Thomas Burns, president and CEO of Glaukos, said in the release.

Publication Exclusive: Pregnant woman presents with floaters and decreased vision

A 32-year-old pregnant woman at 31 weeks’ gestational age was referred to the New England Eye Center for a 1-week history of floaters and decreased vision in the left eye. She complained of 1 day of photophobia and left eye pain.Ocular history was unremarkable. Medical history included prior cesarean section, hepatitis C and spinal desmoid tumors resected and treated with doxorubicin. Valeant Pharmaceuticals names interim CEO

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International announced in a press release that it has appointed Howard B. Schiller as interim CEO.Schiller was Valeant’s chief financial officer from December 2011 through June 2015 and has served on Valeant’s Board of Directors since 2012, according to the release. J. Michael Pearson, Valeant’s CEO, is on medical leave of absence and remains in the hospital where he is being treated for pneumonia, and the timing of his expected return is uncertain, the release stated.

William L. Rich III, MD, begins term as 2016 president of AAO

William L. Rich III, MD, has begun his term as the 119th president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, according to a press release from the AAO.Rich, the AAO’s Medical Director of Health Policy, has more than 20 years of experience in health policy, health care financing and clinical quality metrics. He currently serves as chair of the AAO’s IRIS Registry committee and will continue to guide the implementation of the largest clinical data registry within any medical specialty during his term as president.

Dry eye needs to be evaluated, managed before ocular surgery

Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the tear film and ocular surface resulting in symptoms of discomfort, visual disturbance and tear film instability with potential ocular surface damage. Alteraciones de LIO, poco comunes pero problemáticas

La naturaleza física de un LIO depende principalmente de su material. Si bien los cambios superficiales de la cápsula del lente pueden manifestarse como opacificación capsular, como suele encontrarse luego de la cirugía de cataratas, los cambios superficiales de los LIO son poco frecuentes.
