
People with alopecia areata are approximately four times more likely to have retinal abnormalities compared with those without alopecia areata, according to results from a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The total sample size included 10,832 individuals with alopecia areata (AA) and 134,783 controls across nine studies. Researchers found that one or more retinal abnormalities occurred in 2% of the AA cohort vs. 0.7% of controls, according to results published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
