Alopecia areata may be associated with retinal abnormalities

People with alopecia areata are approximately four times more likely to have retinal abnormalities compared with those without alopecia areata, according to results from a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The total sample size included 10,832 individuals with alopecia areata (AA) and 134,783 controls across nine studies. Researchers found that one or more retinal abnormalities occurred in 2% of the AA cohort vs. 0.7% of controls, according to results published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
“Patients with alopecia areata had significantly higher risk for retinal
