Lifitegrast improves patient-reported dry eye symptoms in OPUS-3 study

NEW ORLEANS — Patients who were treated with lifitegrast for moderate to severe dry eye disease reported improvement in ocular symptoms, according to a study presented here. “In dry eye subjects with moderate to severe baseline symptomology and a history of recent artificial tear use, lifitegrast significantly improved patient-reported symptoms as measured on the dry eye score,” Edward J. Holland, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

iStent inject maintains IOP reduction at 18 months

NEW ORLEANS — A second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stent significantly reduced IOP with no intraoperative complications, according to a study presented here.At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, reported 18-month results obtained with the iStent inject trabecular micro-bypass stent (Glaukos) implanted in patients with mild to moderate glaucoma that was well controlled on a single medication.

Speaker: Physicians must define online reputation

NEW ORLEANS — Physicians need to define their online reputation to better connect with their patients, Kevin Pho, MD, told colleagues here at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting. “We in health care need to redefine ourselves. We need to stop seeing ourselves as gatekeepers of medical and drug information,” Pho said during the ASCRS Lecture on Science, Medicine and Technology. “We need to become filters for our patients and help elevate wisdom on the Web, and social media gives us so many opportunities for us to (Read more...)

Intraoperative miosis associated with higher risk of complications during cataract surgery

NEW ORLEANS — Intraoperative miosis increased the risk of complications during cataract surgery, according to a study presented here. “Understanding the rates of complications associated with intraoperative miosis provides an estimate of economic burden and the potential gain associated with the opportunity to reduce their incidence,” Steven M. Silverstein, MD, FACS, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Low-power accommodating toric IOL shows high rotational stability

NEW ORLEANS — A low-power accommodative toric IOL improved uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity, reduced refractive cylinder and showed high rotational stability in long eyes, according to a study presented here.“The low diopter accommodative toric IOL displayed a very stable rotational component, even in high axial myopes,” Cynthia Matossian, MD, FACS, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Extended range of vision IOL meets endpoint of improved intermediate vision

Nd:YAG capsulotomy elevates vision quality

NEW ORLEANS — Patients with posterior capsule opacity after cataract surgery who underwent Nd:YAG capsulotomy had better visual quality postoperatively, according to a study presented here. “This is a new technology that we are using more and more in our clinic, and we’re understanding that this is something that can help us make clinical decisions, but in retrospect, it can help us justify those clinical decisions,” Jake C. McMillin, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Intraoperative aberrometry reduces astigmatism in patients undergoing IOL implantation

NEW ORLEANS — Use of intraoperative aberrometry reduced residual refractive astigmatism in patients undergoing toric IOL implantation, according to a study presented here. “Our objective was to compare mean preoperative keratometric and postoperative refractive astigmatism and determine the distribution of postoperative refractive astigmatism in eyes implanted with toric IOLs,” Robert P. Lehmann, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

Zeiss markerless system enables precise toric IOL alignment

NEW ORLEANS — With a year of experience using the Zeiss Cataract Suite markerless system, David F.
