EyeGate acquires Jade Therapeutics

EyeGate Pharmaceuticals has acquired Jade Therapeutics, according to a press release. “The integration of Jade into EyeGate significantly strengthens our market position through the addition of a robust preclinical pipeline that complements EyeGate’s ongoing efforts to develop novel treatments for diseases of the eye,” Stephen From, president and CEO of EyeGate, said in the release.

FDA grants marketing approval for Triggerfish IOP monitoring device

The FDA approved the marketing of the Triggerfish device, a soft silicone lens with an embedded sensor that detects tiny changes or fluctuations in the eye’s volume, according to an agency press release. The Triggerfish (Sensimed AG) allows data from the contact lens to be transferred via Bluetooth to the clinician’s computer, which shows the clinician when there is an increase in IOP.

iStent yields greatest IOP reduction in eyes with highest baseline pressure

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — IOP reduction correlated strongly with preoperative IOP in patients who underwent cataract surgery with iStent implantation, according to a scientific poster presented at the American Glaucoma Society meeting here.“The increased efficacy of the iStent among glaucoma patients with higher pressures means that those who need IOP reduction the most will experience the greatest benefit,” Reay H. Brown, MD, and colleagues wrote. “Longer follow-up shows that patients with IOP greater than 21 mm Hg have a substantial IOP reduction that persisted to almost 2 years. Patients with (Read more...)

Stepwise approach ideal for pre-Descemet’s endothelial keratoplasty

Endothelial keratoplasty has revolutionized the surgical approach for corneal endothelial disorders that are normally not well managed with a medical line of treatment and often necessitate a surgical approach.Pre-Descemet’s endothelial keratoplasty (PDEK) is a newer option among the variants of endothelial keratoplasty; it essentially requires the transplantation of the pre-Descemet’s layer in association with the Descemet’s membrane-endothelium complex. OCT studies have demonstrated the thickness of the PDEK donor graft to be approximately 30 µm to 35 µm with both adult and infant donor tissue. The addition of the pre-Descemet’s layer (Read more...)

Speaker: Advantages of same-day bilateral cataract surgery outweigh disadvantages

Immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery delivers patient satisfaction, is efficient, lowers society costs and reduces risk to the second eye, according to a presentation at OSN New York 2015.“I do believe at some point in the future if you do not offer same-day surgery to your patients, you will be at a competitive disadvantage,” Richard K. Stiverson, MD, told colleagues while outlining the advantages and disadvantages of the procedure.

More financial, human capital needs to be invested to reduce burden of high myopia

In the early 1980s, I became interested in the surgical treatment of myopia as a surgeon in the Prospective Evaluation of Radial Keratotomy study. In this study, we were treating patients with low to moderate myopia. While there is room for disagreement, I categorize –0.125 D to –3 D as low myopia, –3.125 D to –6 D as moderate myopia and over –6 D as high myopia. Going all the way back to Sir Stewart Duke-Elder, myopia over –6 D has been considered “pathologic myopia,” and these are the patients (Read more...)

Second-stage operation of Mooren’s ulcer

Mooren’s ulcer is a clinical entity that results in peripheral ulcerative keratitis and corneal ulceration. A subset of these patients requires surgical intervention to stabilize the cornea and maintain ocular integrity. Although both cell-mediated and humoral immune mechanisms have been implicated in the possible pathogenic pathway leading to peripheral corneal melt and corneal ulceration, the exact etiology is yet to be fully understood. The clinical signs and symptoms and the types of Mooren’s ulcer were described in a previous Ocular Surgery News article about the first stage of surgery in this (Read more...)
