For the average general ophthalmology practice, and before considering optical or ambulatory surgical facilities, it’s typical to generate $500 to $1,000 in annual collections per square foot of office space. Said another way, at the usual intensity of utilization, with each doctor seeing 40 to 60 patients per day, 3 to 4 days per week, most practices need a square foot of floor space for every five new or established patients seen each year.

GenSight Biologics closes €32 million in financing for gene therapy

GenSight Biologics has raised €32 million in series A financing to help fund development of a gene replacement therapy for Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy and an optogenetic therapy for retinitis pigmentosa, according to a company news release.GenSight will make use of its access to intellectual property from Novartis, along with a proprietary approach to targeting mitochondria development in Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy.

Revenue up 3% in first half for Carl Zeiss Meditec

Carl Zeiss Meditec reported revenue of €442 million in the first 6 months of the fiscal year, up 3% from €431.8 million in the same period of the previous year, according to a company news release. Revenue for the ophthalmic systems strategic business unit fell by about 5% from the same period a year ago, from €184.8 million to €176 million, the release said.

i-Optics closes €11.8 million in financing round

i-Optics closed the second phase of its round D financing with €5.1 million in new investment, in addition to €6.7 million raised during the first phase of the round, according to a company news release.The company intends to use the funds to expedite the global rollout of its EasyScan zero-dilation retinal imaging system and the Cassini cornea topographer, designed to improve cataract surgery outcomes and specialty contact lens fitting, the release said.

Beaver-Visitec buys Odyssey Medical’s ophthalmic assets

Beaver-Visitec International has purchased all ophthalmic assets of Odyssey Medical, according to a news release. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.The transaction will add Odyssey’s Parasol Punctal Occluder and other products focused on dry eye solutions to the Beaver-Visitec line of products for ophthalmic and specialty microsurgical procedures, the release said.

Retinal sensitivity potentially useful in evaluating anti-VEGF treatment of wet AMD

Measuring retinal sensitivity in patients treated with intravitreal ranibizumab for neovascular age-related macular degeneration may assist with evaluating the treatment’s effectiveness, according to a study.The prospective, interventional case series included 42 eyes of 39 patients with neovascular AMD. All eyes were treated with 0.5 mg intravitreal Lucentis (ranibizumab, Genentech) once a month for 3 months. Treatment continued as needed.
