A large surface area application of mitomycin C during trabeculectomy attained a higher IOP reduction and a reduced rate of bleb scarring compared with eyes treated with a small area of application, according to a study.One hundred ninety-one eyes were included in the retrospective study; 96 eyes underwent trabeculectomy with small-area MMC application and 95 eyes underwent trabeculectomy with large-area MMC application.

Drusen regression linked to autofluorescence changes in intermediate AMD

Drusen regression was frequently associated with changes in local autofluorescence signal in eyes with intermediate age-related macular degeneration, according to a study.The prospective study included 58 eyes of 58 patients with intermediate AMD and large drusen with a diameter of 125 µm or greater. All eyes underwent color fundus photography, red-free monochromatic fundus photography and fundus autofluorescence at baseline and 2-year follow-up.

PK yields good surgical outcome in young patients with Peters’ anomaly

Penetrating keratoplasty produced a good surgical outcome in patients 5 years old and younger with Peters’ anomaly; however, the outcome was poor for those with sclerocornea, according to a study.The retrospective study included 18 patients who underwent 20 PK procedures; eight patients had Peters’ anomaly and 10 patients had sclerocornea.The mean patient age was 21.7 months at the time of surgery, and patients were followed for a mean 92.7 months.
